The Best Fire Pokemon, Ranked (2025)

Fire-type Pokemon stand as some of the most popular in the entire franchise, with tons of representation and a reputation for being among the strongest in the games. Ever since the days of Charmander, the Fire-type starter has been a popular choice with budding young trainers eager to start their Pokemon journey. Plenty of powerful non-starters have helped shape the way fans feel about these red-hot Pokemon.

Be it starters, legendaries, or anything in between, Fire types are well-represented in the Pokemon universe. A good Water type can neutralize even the strongest of the bunch, so trainers have to get creative when considering certain match-ups. The best Fire-type Pokemon can circumvent these weaknesses in some way or another, which is why they’re so popular with fans. There might be many options out there for trainers to explore, but these will always be the best Fire Pokemon.

One of the three First Partner Pokemon blazes the eternal flame of the Fire-types, but usually, they are quite rare to find throughout a trainer's journey. However, there are a few Fire Pokemon which are awesome to use as part of a party of six. This update adds seven more of the best Fire Pokemon, taking the grand total to 50.

50 Castform (Sunny Mode)

Fire-type

• Generation: 3
• Game Introduced: Pokemon Ruby & Sapphire
• Best Nature: Timid
• Weak To: Ground (4x), Rock (2x), Water (2x)

Castform is an interesting Pokemon. It changes its type depending on which form of weather is out on the field. When there is sun, it becomes a Fire-type. If gamers are trying to complete a Fire-type-only playthrough of a game, the Weather Pokemon may be tricky to work out as it will need Sunny Day in its moveset.

Stats-wise, it is even across the board, with 70 in each category. It is versatile, but to its dismay, it has no real strength in any area. Given the base form of this Pokemon is not a Fire-type and its lackluster stats, it is safe to say this Pokemon is bottom of the pile when it comes to its fiery colleagues.

Castform's Base Stats:

49 Oricorio (Baile Style)

Fire/Flying-type

Another Pokemon has different forms, but in Oricorio's case, it isn't just in battle. There are four different versions of the Dancing Pokemon, based on a different form of dance, with each of them having a different type.

In this case, the Baile Style is a Fire/Flying type, which is a handy type to have in the locker. However, there are a few different options when it comes to this type of combination. Its stats are okay, fairly average across the board, but with an emphasis on Special Attack and Speed. Its signature move, Revelation Dance, works well with this Pokemon as it changes type depending on its form, increasing its STAB (Same Type Attack Bonus) potential.

Oricorio Baile Style's Base Stats:

48 Galarian Darmanitan (Zen Mode)

There are a lot of Fire-type Pokemon that depend on form, and this one is a Galarian variation of the Generation 5 Pokemon Darmanitan, specifically its Zen Mode. Galarian Darmanitan is at base form a pure Ice-type, but if it has the Zen Mode ability, it can become the only Ice/Fire-type Pokemon in the game when its HP is below 50%.

This is just a gimmick as it now gains a 4x weakness to Rock, whereas before, it was just a 2x weakness. It doesn't learn any Fire moves naturally but can learn Fire Punch, Flare Blitz and Fire Fang to make use of its high attack stat by TM or TR. Considering how hard this Pokemon is to become a Fire-type, it can't be given a high ranking.

Galarian Darmanitan Zen Mode's Base Stats:

47 Centiskorch

Fire/Bug-type

Introduced in Pokemon Sword & Shield as just the second Fire/Bug evolutionary line. The Radiator Pokemon evolves from Sizzlipede at level 28 and is best known as the signature Pokemon of the Fire-type Gym Leader Kabu. With fantastic stats, especially in HP and Attack, it is a very solid Fire option on the Nintendo Switch.

This Pokemon also has the benefit of having a Gigantamax form, which boosts its Max moves when Dynamax, giving it an extra edge and a very cool look in battle.

Centiskorch's Base Stats:

46 Coalossal

Rock/Fire-type

Despite having two 4x weaknesses to Ground and Water, the Generation 8 Pokemon Coalossal is one of the best Fire-type Pokemon in the game. Its design is impressive; a big rock monster with a mound of fiery coal on its back stands out among the other fire types of its generation.

Stats-wise it is sold all-around (aside from speed), with a large emphasis on its defensive stats and HP. What gives this 'mon an edge over its competitors is that it can Gigantamax, which changes its form when Dynamaxing is always pretty cool. All three of its abilities have their use in battle. Steam Engine, its signature ability, means that when it is hit with a Water move its Speed is vastly improved. It is convenient in battle.

Coalossal's Base Stats:

45 Magcargo

Another Fire & Rock type with the Generation 2 Magcargo, this Pokemon is a bit of a meme thanks to its derpy look and its name. Its Physical Defense is its best attribute, which is needed as it is weak to Rock, Ground, and Fighting, largely physical types.

Flame Body burns opponents on contact. Magma Armor prevents it from being frozen, and Weak Armor lowers its Defense but raises its Speed. These three solid abilities give Magcargo an edge in battle. A magma slug is a perfect design, and it is a perfect example of a Pokemon design that turns a real-life animal on its head.

44 Rapidash

The original 151 Pokemon are always preferred to older fans due to nostalgia. When it comes to fire types, there aren't too many to choose from out of the Kanto 'mons. Rapidash is certainly one to select here though.

With fantastic attack and speed, a Jolly nature helps to boost those stats and is capable of hitting hard and fast with STAB (Same Type Attack Bonus) moves such as Flame Wheel and Flare Blitz. Rapidash should have received a Pegasus-inspired Mega Evolution. Perhaps the horse will receive one in the next entry in the Pokemon franchise, Pokemon Legends Z-A.

43 Ninetales

Another iconic Pokemon in Ninetales, the fiery fox, was inspired by the kitsune of Japanese legend, and it lives up to that in the games. Gamers will need to give Vulpix a Fire Stone to use this Pokemon in one of their playthroughs.

Stats-wise, it is solid across the board with a focus on special attack, special defense, and speed. Flamethrower or Fire Blast are the ideal moves to use on Ninetales to get the best out of their skills. Out of its abilities, there are two great ones. Flash Fire boosts its Fire moves by 50% if hit by a Fire move, and Drought, which gives it some help against Water types.

42 Blacephalon

Just looking at this Pokemon does not scream that it is a Fire-type, but it actually is and, just like all the Ultra Beasts, they are weird, even for Pokemon. Blacephalon shines in special attack and attack, but it is also very fast.

Its signature move, Mind Blown, is epic as it can deal 150 damage, but it also takes damage equal to half of its maximum HP rounded up. Shadow Ball, Will-O-Wisp, and Calm Mind make up for a beast of a moveset. What lets this Pokemon down is its really low defense, HP, and its five weaknesses.

Blacephalon's Base Stats:

41 Scovillain

Fire/Grass-type

Fans were crying out for a Fire/Grass-type Pokemon, as before Scovillain, the type combination had never been used. Although some Pokefans were not overly impressed by the design of the coveted Fire/Grass 'mon, it is still a decent and useable Pokemon in the game.

Scovillain is a mixed attacker with equal attack and defense. It can be used to take down a wide variety of foes with their differing defense stats. Along with its pre-evolution, Capsakid, no other Pokemon has this typing, which gives it some bonus points when discussing the best Fire-type Pokemon.

Scovillain's Base Stats:

40 Turtonator

Fire/Dragon-type

Even though dragons famously breathe fire, Turtonator is the only non-legendary or Mega Evolution Fire/Dragon-type. This alone is a great reason that it should be featured among the best Fire-type Pokemon.

Defensively, this Pokemon is amazing, but its offense isn't great. It is a much better special attacker, however, and can smash opponents with a Flamethrower or Dragon Pulse. Its ability Shell Armor means Turtonator cannot be struck with any critical hits, which is always a worry, especially if a gamer is playing a Nuzlocke.

39 Cinderace

One thing that Pokemon Sword & Shield did right was having the three Starter Pokemon represent parts of the culture of the United Kingdom, the country in which the Galar region is based. Inteleon is based on spies, specifically James Bond. Rillaboom is based on a drummer as the UK has a big music scene. Lastly, CInderace is based on a soccer player, the biggest sport in the UK.

The fire rabbit is also a useful battler in the game and one of the best Fire-type Pokemon in the entire franchise. Its signature move, Pyro Ball, is a 120-base power move which, combined with its 116, is deadly for opposing Pokemon. It also got a starring role in the anime as one of the main Pokemon of protagonist Goh in the Pokemon Journeys series.

38 Typhlosion

Typhlosion is an awesome Pokemon, one of the final forms of the Johto starters, and it is a fantastic option to choose for that game due to the lack of Fire types in the second generation. Sadly, its transition into 3D sprites hasn't done this fire honey badger any justice due to its lack of flames.

As a fast Special Attacker, Typhlosion shines with a high-powered STAB Flamethrower attack that will leave enemy Grass types quaking in their leaves. What lets this 'mon down is its lack of a secondary typing, something that was fixed when it was included in Pokemon Legends: Arceus.

Typhlosion's Base Stats:

37 Torkoal

Fire-type

• Generation: 3

• Best Nature: Timid

Made famous in the anime as one of Ash's Pokemon in the Hoenn region, Torkoal, the flaming turtle, is a beast to use. With its ability of Drought capable of weakening Water moves, it can also tank hits with its whopping defense stat.

It can also deal decent attacks and special attacks. However, this Pokemon is so slow that there is no way that it will come first in any battle. It can learn the awesome move Shell Smash, which decreases defenses and increases attacks and speed. Shell Smash, Drought with Protect, and Leftovers make Torkoal a significant force in competitive battling.

36 Emboar

Fire/Fighting-type

Emboar gets a bad rep among the Pokemon community for being the third Fire/Fighting starter Pokemon in a row, but this is unfair criticism as the flaming hog is an amazing Pokemon in the games.

Capable of hitting hard with physical and special moves, it is also a tank with 110 HP, it has its uses in the games, and it deserves its place as one of the best Fire types in the franchise. Emboar evolves from Pignite at level 36 and is the final form of the cute little piglet Tepig. That is a good enough reason to be on this list.

35 Darmanitan

The Orangutan Pokemon is a decent one to use in Pokemon, but its usefulness increases when it has the ability of Zen Mode. This allows it to switch forms in battle when its HP is below 50%. This greatly improves its defenses and special attacks. The user essentially has two Pokemon in one.

The Zen Mode gains the Psychic typing, which will grant STAB to Psychic moves. Learning the move Psychic by TM will be awesome thanks to Zen Mode Darmanitan's solid special attack stat. Otherwise, Darmanitan is still great, with fantastic attack, HP, and speed.

Darmanitan's Base Stats:

34 Alolan Morowak

Fire/Ghost-type

• Best Nature: Adamant
• Weak To: Ground (2x), Rock (2x), Ghost (2x), Water (2x), Dark (2x)

Pokemon Sun & Moon introduced regional variants, different forms of the same Pokemon that have different appearances and, for the most part, different types. One of these Pokemon is the originally Ground-type Marowak, which was given the Fire/Ghost type in the Alola region.

The Alola region has a Hawaiian inspiration and Marowak has a wonderful twist on this with its signature bone becoming a fire dancer's staff, an important part of Hawaiian tradition. In battle, it has great defenses and a solid Physical Attack, which is useful for its signature move, Shadow Bone, which is also boosted by its STAB Ghost typing. Its amazing design is a reason why it is one of the best Fire-type Pokemon.

Marowak's Base Stats:

33 Flareon

Eevee and its many evolutions are iconic and Flareon, the Fire-type entry, is no exception. As one of the three original Eeveelutions it has a special place in fans' hearts and that alone makes it one of the best Fire-type Pokemon.

However, not only that, Flareon is an awesome battler. It has insane Physical attack and Special Defense and is fairly solid all-around elsewhere. When looking for a Fire-type Pokemon to use in a game, Flareon is always a go-to. It helps that it is available in each game as well. Flash Fire is a great ability. When Flareon is hit with a Fire-type move it gains a boost to its Fire moves by 50%, something to work on in a battle.

Flareon's Base Stats:

32 Talonflame

Gen 6 brought gamers Talonflame, it was amazing to see the regional bird have the Fire typing which was a first for its time as before they had solely been Normal/Flying.

His speed is so impressive and with a perfect ability of Flame Body which burns opponents on contact, gamers have got an awesome Pokemon and one of the best Fire types. What lets Talonflame down is its 4x weakness to Rock types, one Rock Slide, and it is down, avoid them at all costs.

Talonflame's Base Stats:

31 Rotom (Heat Form)

• Best Nature: Timid

Surprisingly, this Pokemon is still the only Fire/Electric type Pokemon in the entire franchise, that alone makes this Pokemon one of the best fire types. Rotom Heat is solid defensively, so it could be used as a decent wall competitively, with just two weaknesses to take advantage of.

Rotom is a unique Pokemon, capable of changing its type through different forms, and the Fire-type Pokemon benefit greatly from this electric brother. Water types should run in fear of this fiery Pokemon, capable of hitting back with an STAB Discharge.
